ABOUT THE SOURCE + PRODUCERS
This is our first coffee sourced from Sundog/Baho and we're so excited to be working with Ben and Emmanuel. The US importing arm (Sundog) and the Rwanda exporting arm (Baho) were created with shared idealistic visions of how coffee should move around the globe. Both work together to improve access to the specialty market for smallholder farmers. As is standard practice for Baho-owned washing stations - training, inputs, and substantial contributions towards health insurance premiums are provided for all farmers delivering. Each station also has an agronomist on site that organizes training sessions focused on topics such as coffee plant care (planting, fertilizing, pruning, harvesting, etc), environmental protection, and the importance of Sundog/Baho's traceability efforts.
Located in the Southern Province of Rwanda, Fugi is nestled between the Nyungwe National Forest and the border of Burundi. This was the first washing station owned by Baho, and has been dedicated solely to producing specialty grade coffee since 2016. Meaning confidence in Kinyarwanda, Ikizere is the name chosen by the original group of women at the Fugi station in 2019 to represent Baho’s flagship initiative of traceable lot separations. Through supporting the Ikizere project, we hope to promote powerful women thriving in their communities and share a platform upon which their voices can be internationally heard.
